Kundalini Meditation

Definition of Kundalini

Kundalini refers to the energy of the Divine. If this energy is projected into the world, it binds the individual. If it is returned to the divine origin, it liberates the individual. Spiritual practices have the objective of raising this energy from the chakra located near the base of the spine to the chakra in the crown of the head. This awakens a powerful transformative energy. This energy can eliminate the deep seated tensions, annihilate the misunderstandings regarding the true nature of self and enhance the flow of creative energy within the body. Kundalini meditation is done to obtain profound spiritual awakening.

Shaktipat

Kundalini is represented as a coiled serpent. The three coils of the serpent represent three energies. These are "Prana kundalini - the energy that is associated with physical body life", "Chitta kundalini - the energy that is linked to the mind or emotions" and "Para kundalini - the energy of our spiritual self." Due to meditation, this energy that is present in a dormant state in each person rises upwards through the spine. It activates the physic mechanism or the chakras. Due to the rising of the kundalini, there is deeper awareness and consciousness. There is an effect on the tensions, ignorance, blocks and ego. When the kundalini reaches the Sahasrara Chakra, the individual becomes totally aware of his unity with the Divine. Such a transmission of energy is called "Shaktipat."

Method of meditation

The meditator should sit on the floor with his legs crossed. Preferably, a cushion ought to be used to sit upon. Alternatively, he can sit on a chair. His head must be erect, the spine straight and eyes closed. After folding the hands in a lap, he has to breathe evenly. The breathe-in counts are 1 and 2. The breathe-out counts are 3 and 4. Initially, this pattern has to be used for one minute. The breath should not be retained. While breathing is in progress, the meditator has to contemplate lovingly about minimum one single person. Such love filled thoughts enable to harmonize the body and the mind. This causes maximum kundalini to flow from the unseen Source towards the meditator by the unseen force. After the kundalini has been roused by such thoughts, the body is energized due to the stillness of meditation.
