Main Types of Yoga

Yoga exercises are varied and, based on this variety, many different types of yoga are known. An individual's choice of the appropriate form of yoga for him or her will depend on several factors among which the key ones are his or her level of fitness, goals, and medical condition. Briefly described below are four main types of yoga.

Iyengar yoga
Iyengar yoga centers on proper alignment and precise body movements. It frequently makes use of props such as blocks or straps as part of the exercises for those who lack body flexibility but also to compensate for injuries. Since it pays great attention to details and the modification of poses, Iyengar yoga is highly recommended for people suffering from back pain or neck pain. Modification to the poses has been very beneficial to such people. Down Dog, Triangle with Block, and Triangle with Chair are some of the commonest poses of Iyengar yoga.

Ashtanga yoga
This type of yoga is commonly termed power yoga due to the fact that it focuses on powerful flowing movements, for example push-ups and lunges, exercises that require strength and stamina. Ashtanga yoga is more appropriate for people who have healed from a back injury and are looking for a more strenuous practice. It is also befitting people who have athletic build like runners and cyclists, and for those who want to attain greater flexibility, balance and greater power of concentration in their exercise routines.

Bikram yoga
Bikram yoga is another of famous types of yoga. It is also known as hot yoga for the reason that its exercises are performed in a very warm room. Bikram yoga is best for arriving at greater flexibility. The role of heat in this is manifest: heat helps body tissues to stretch more easily. However Bikram yoga is not recommended for patients of cardiovascular diseases because of the strain placed on the body while performing vigorous exercises in the heat.

Viniyoga
This type of yoga links breathing and body movement in flowing exercises that are adapted to the individual needs of each person. Viniyoga is often helpful for people having back problems or neck problems because of its adaptability for each person.

Many other types of yoga exist and it is suggested to discuss with the yoga teacher his or her philosophy and emphasis on any particular type before taking a yoga course.

All types of yoga can prove rewarding, life-long activities for better health and body functions as well as mental steadiness. The emphasis on a particular type depends on the individual's specific needs or purpose.

Aerobics Instructor: A Fun Career In Fitness

Aerobics classes are fantastic ways to lose weight while having fun. There aren't many exercise methods that can claim the same thing. Becoming an aerobics instructor isn't as difficult as you may think. Many aerobics instructors are just former aerobics students. They have so much experience in aerobics that they are able to lead others. The main thing an aerobics instructor must have is motivation. They must not only have motivation to motivate themselves but they must be able to motivate others. Motivation is the key ingredient to any good aerobics instructor.

Music, Many Times, Makes The Class

Another aspect of a good aerobics instructor is the ability to choose good music to work out to. The music should have a fun beat that really gets the heart going and provides the extra motivation that people need when working out. A good soundtrack can make people forget they're working out, to an extent, and can make the time fly by. Combined with good instruction from the aerobics instructor, many times, the music makes the aerobics class.

When deciding to become an aerobics instructor, you should decide what type of aerobics class you want to teach. You should teach only those aerobics classes that you are familiar with. That is, you should only teach the aerobics classes that you, yourself, have participated in. You wouldn't want to teach an aerobics class where you're not familiar with all the moves. The class, who may be familiar with that particular class, will clearly see that you're not qualified to teach that class and you may soon find yourself with an empty room as people won't want to finish the work out.

To get started, visit your local fitness centers and ask them if they are in need of any aerobics instructors. Many times, there are several aerobics instructors at any one facility since they hold so many classes throughout the day. Once you secure a position, come up with a good work out plan that you can take the class through. Work on your motivation, your voice, so you can be heard even at the back of the class, and pick a good workout soundtrack. Once you have all of these aspects down pat, you'll soon become the aerobics instructor you've always wanted to be. You'll look great but, most importantly, you'll help others look great, too. There's no better feeling than that.

Chinese meditation

Meditation has been practiced since ages in different parts of the world.

The word meditation has originated from the Latin word meditation which means any physical or intellectual exercise. Practicing meditation helps oneself to calm down his mind and body. It rejuvenates a person creating a feeling of inner peace and well being. Meditation can be said as a state of relaxed concentration or focusing mind on a single object for that matter. It is believed that meditation connects ones mind and body to the soul. There are certain general guidelines which can be stated about how meditation should be practiced -

a) Sitting in a particular posture as ascribed in the particular form of meditation one will be carrying out. This helps in breathing which in turn helps in relaxation.

b) It is advisable to carry out meditation in the same place where you practice it daily. The place should be quiet which will ensure that you are not disturbed while meditating.

There are various forms of meditation practiced all over the world. Different religions and regions have evolved their own types of meditation to name a few Buddhism, Indian, Chinese, Japanese, Islam and many more. Here we will be concentrating on Chinese meditation.

Chinese meditation practices mainly include Qigong. Qigong has emerged from the traditional Chinese medicine. It is nothing but art of managing ones own breathing which helps in maintenance of good health. It mainly emphasizes on how to move and feel energy within the body. Some of the basic exercises include standing still for a few minutes or hours together at a time this enables a person to realize the movement of energy within the body. The main focus of these exercises is on conservation of energy thus the movements are very gentle and are of rhythmic nature. There are approximately 3,300 different styles and schools of Qigong.

Qigong not only help in toning up and relaxation of the body but also makes it more flexible. But if these Qigong exercises are not practiced under the supervision of trained individuals may lead to physical and mental complications in body. Taking into consideration all these factors China has laid down some guidelines for these Qigong teaching schools but still they are very popular in China.

Yoga Therapy for Better Health

Yoga therapy has been in practice for centuries as a means of attaining both physical and mental health. This article takes a brief look at the role of yoga as a form of therapy and an example of simple yoga breathing techniques for staying healthy and relaxed.

Yoga Therapy for the Mind

Not only do yoga exercises keep the body in good form but also provide invaluable mental health benefits. Pranayama (or control over breathing) has been found a great form of yoga therapy for checking negative emotions. Clinical evidence reveals that alternate nostril breathing, as practiced in yoga, creates a positive balance in the two hemispheres of the brain and the autonomic nervous system (ANS). Yoga therapy, based on breathing, also lightens the mood, relieves somberness, and restores mental energy. In fact, yogis regard psychotherapy as the modern form of yoga therapy.

Yoga and Food
.
A study of the American Cancer Society in 1999 found that more than one-third of all the cancer deaths occur due to bad nutrition. Developing healthy eating habits can prevent these and yoga therapy can be of great value in this matter. It has a centuries old eating philosophy centered on balanced whole-foods diets. These principles were the cause of the longevity of ancient yogis (over a hundred years usually).

Yoga principles advocate that foods should be taken in as much of their natural state as possible (hence the name whole-foods) and should not be processed much before use. Such diet makes possible the three functions of digestion i.e. absorption, assimilation, and elimination.

Simple Yoga Therapy via Breathing

While yoga breathing exercises are invaluable in their effects, many of these do not require hours of practice. These take only a few minutes and yet keep the body and mind healthy. Following is one such series of breathing exercises that take only six minutes to complete. Follow this regularly, daily, and you can feel a clear improvement in your energy and ability to function. However, this exercise should not be performed by people suffering from cervical problems.

Start by resting your arms on the sides. Rotate your shoulders, first clockwise and then counterclockwise, five times each. Bend your head as if trying to touch the shoulders. Repeat it five times on each side. Then bend the head forward and backward alternately. Keep the neck erect and, while bending forward, press the chin against the neck.
Now close your eyes and let your mind relax. Breathe normally, while remaining conscious to the inhalation and exhalation. Feel the movements of your breathing. This technique is wonderfully de-stressing.

Closing your eyes, take deep gentle breaths. Feel the incoming air from the bottom i.e. stomach upwards to the top of the lungs. Now exhale the air, letting it out first from the top and then downward from the stomach. Repeat this ten times, using 'imagination of breathing in fresh oxygen'. Remember, that a standing position is best for this exercise.
